Raise Awareness
Become a LAM Advocate! Individuals with LAM and their loved ones make the best case for supporting the work of The LAM Foundation. A personal story is what drives others to action. Do not underestimate the power and value of your story.
Since LAM is a rare disease, our community plays a critical role in educating others about its impact. Here are some of the many ways to help raise the profile of The LAM Foundation both within and outside of your network.
Bring LAM to Your Community
- Hold an educational event about LAM and The LAM Foundation in your home, school, church, or other social outlet. The more people know about LAM, the more effective our work will be. Send letters or e-mails to connections to inform them about LAM and the need for financial support.
- You may be part of a cultural organization with a special interest in health or women’s issues. Ask to be a guest speaker and share information about LAM and The LAM Foundation. Click here for talking points to help you prepare.
- Share your story with your local newspaper or TV station, company, church, or school newsletter about LAM and the work of The LAM Foundation. If you need help putting your story on paper, contact us. We are here to help.
- Add a link to The LAM Foundation’s website on your e-mail signature.
Thespena Panos, a woman with LAM and Greek American, spoke about her LAM journey to the Daughters of Penelope, a Greek women’s organization that donates to causes primarily affecting women. As a result, her group pledged to contribute thousands of dollars to The LAM Foundation.
Worldwide LAM Awareness Month
Help raise the profile of The LAM Foundation and its partners by participating in Worldwide LAM Awareness Month (WWLAM) in June. WWLAM brings together the global community in a collaborative effort to educate the world about the signs and symptoms of LAM, raise funds to support women living with LAM and share our global achievements to inspire researchers and clinicians to optimize therapies and find a cure for LAM. Click here to see how you can participate.
Promote a LAM Clinic
The LAM Foundation has established over 70 global clinics to ensure that LAM patients have access to expert care within major healthcare institutions. However, many working in these vast institutions may not always be aware of them. You can change that. Connect with the marketing team at these hospitals or medical centers to promote LAM and the innovative role their clinics are playing in treating this rare women’s disease.
Government Advocacy
Make calls, write letters, and send e-mails to your legislators when critical issues affect healthcare, research, and rare diseases. Your voice matters. Currently, there is a massive effort on the part of The LAM Foundation and other patient advocacy groups to get Congress to pass comprehensive oxygen reform to ensure access to liquid oxygen for patients for whom it is medically necessary. Rare Disease Day
Falling in the last week of February, Rare Disease Day is a day to raise awareness of the more than 7,000 rare diseases that impact over 300 million people globally. Shine a spotlight on LAM by getting involved in events, sharing your story on social media, or fundraising for The LAM Foundation.
Event Volunteer
Hundreds of volunteers have helped The LAM Foundation accomplish its research, education, and support goals throughout the world. You can make a difference by volunteering for events and regional meetings.
