Fundraising Simplified: Elizabeth Hardy

For her birthday, Elizabeth Hardy decided that instead of receiving gifts from her friends and family, she wanted to do something with a little more meaning. It was a big birthday for Elizabeth as she was not only turning 60, but it was also the 25th year since receiving her LAM diagnosis. She wanted to take this opportunity to ask her closest friends to join her for a brunch to celebrate and donate to The LAM Foundation as their birthday “gift”. Much to Elizabeth’s surprise, nearly everyone she told about her fundraiser sent a donation to The LAM Foundation in her honor.

Elizabeth wasn’t necessarily looking forward to asking people for money, but she was blown away by the response she received from people wanting to support her. She said of the experience, “the most surprising part of fundraising was how generous everyone was!” Through her own generosity, Elizabeth matched every gift that The LAM Foundation received in her honor. When all was said and done, Elizabeth had celebrated two milestones and raised nearly $5,000 for The LAM Foundation.

While many people have a passion for planning events, fundraising for The LAM Foundation doesn’t always come in the form of a gala, golf outing or 5K. The only true requirement is passionSharing your story about the mission of The LAM Foundation through a letter to your personal network or, like Elizabeth, celebrating your birthday with a purposecan result in unexpected generosity.  As Elizabeth says, “Every fundraiser—big or small—is important. If nine more people follow Elizabeth’s example, the Foundation will have the funds to support a LAM scientist with a $50,000 Pilot Grant Award – pushing LAM science forward! Every dollar makes a difference!
