University of Cincinnati Endowed Professorship
In 2021, The LAM Foundation partnered with the University of Cincinnati Foundation to establish The LAM Foundation Endowed Professorship. This prestigious position was established to facilitate global information-sharing regarding lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), enabling collaboration among patients, researchers and clinicians. Nishant Gupta, MD, was appointed as The LAM Foundation Endowed Professor (see Nishant Gupta, MD) in January 2021. Dr. Gupta is the Director of the University of Cincinnati Interstitial Lung Disease Program and a Professor of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati.
A prominent clinician-researcher in rare lung diseases, including LAM, Dr. Gupta actively supports LAM patients, collaborates extensively with The LAM Foundation, participates within our clinical and scientific networks, advances LAM research, and serves as a dedicated LAM advocate.
The partnership between The LAM Foundation and the University of Cincinnati has been a cornerstone of progress in LAM, achieving several significant milestones:
- Creating a peer reviewed grant mechanism, which has provided over $20M in seed funding for LAM investigators and generated the preclinical data that has made clinical trials possible
- Securing NIH grants in 2003 and 2014 to establish the Rare Lung Disease Network
- Leading the MILES clinical trial, which demonstrated the efficacy of sirolimus, the first FDA-approved treatment for LAM
- Developing a diagnostic biomarker, reducing the need for lung biopsy in many LAM patients
- Spearheading the creation of international clinical guidelines for the management of LAM
- Maintaining a longitudinal MIDAS registry, to chart the natural history of LAM and effectiveness of treatments
- Supporting ongoing clinical trials, including MILED, to determine if low dose, early treatment with sirolimus can avoid progression to more advanced stages
- This enduring collaboration continues to drive innovation and support for the global LAM community
